Nutritional Rehabilitation Homes
Malnourished children in Nepal

How the NRH Began

Doctor and mother are happy that a malnourished baby is restored to healthThe needs of these children came to our urgent attention in the 1990's when we visited Kanti Children's Hospital in Kathmandu and discovered a five-year-old girl who was hospitalized with a severe lung infection caused by malnourishment. She weighed only 25 pounds. She received antibiotics to cure the infection, and when the infection was under control, she was discharged even though she had gained only 8 ounces and could not stand or walk. The hospital explained that it needed the bed for acutely ill children.

As we have witnessed, children who return to their villages in this condition sometimes do not survive. If they do, they grow up stunted physically or mentally, since they return to the same deprived environment that brought them to the hospital in the first place.

We launched the NRH on the recommendation and with the cooperation of a prominent pediatrician in Kanti Children’s Hospital, the first and largest general children's hospital in the country. Read on for how the NRH operates...
